Just 6 km from the ocean, Ascain is the gateway to the Basque hinterland. With its small pediment and charming church, you will find a rather bewitching and pure village atmosphere. Bordered by the Nivelle, it is a paradise for fishermen. Not to mention, hikers, who are delighted to be here. Nestled at the foot of the Rhune, the town is the starting point for many hikes. 

After the Col de Saint-Ignace, Sare appears in a valley and here you are in one of the “Most beautiful villages of France”. Sare possesses everything, just like a postcard of a Basque village along with a soul and much more. Around its pediment and its shops, you will certainly hear Euskara, the Basque language being spoken. Most of all, visit this gem with baby steps, to stay true to its motto: "Saran astia" which means "In Sare, we have time".

Former stopover for shepherds and pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela, the bastide village built around a main street is a haven of great beauty where one is able to totally unplug. Not to be missed: the walk to the Aubépine chapel on the hill overlooking Ainhoa. From above, you will see a striking 360° view of the Basque mountains. A 45 minutes’ walk from the village.

Known for its famous pepper which decorates the facades of its houses with strings but most of all, enhances Basque cuisine, Espelette remains a must in the region.
