The hotel has a split character, almost bipolar, which is indeed its strength. On the one side, a part of the establishment is very rooted in the town and its traditional Basque spirit. On the other is the ocean, inspired by the modern architecture of Mallet-Stevens who designed the Pergola and Casino. It is a bridge between these two worlds, a very subtle dialogue.
I wanted to restore its Art Deco identity and the Maritime style of the 1930s. This can be seen in several features. In the rooms, for example, the bathroom mirrors open as if portholes. There are also the geometric-patterned wallpaper and the bed headboards. Elsewhere, it can be seen in the floor mosaics or the main inside spiral staircase linking reception to the spa. The nearer one gets to the ocean, the more apparent the Art Deco references.
Natural materials, especially light-coloured wood such as oak. In the Basque country, working oak is a tradition in the construction of boats. Otherwise, the colours are influenced by the duality of the views. Town side, you’ll find touches of deep red while ocean side, they take on hues of blue and grey.
In all modesty, the Spa! It is incredible with its view over the horizon. The outside light plays with the inside architecture, whatever the weather in the bay!
Wandering around the hotel, you will find a superb tribute paid to local Basque craftsmanship. In reception, admire the graceful pottery in Navarre clay, produced by the Goicoechea family over the last three generations. Nearby, serving as separation with the bar, the Alki workshop has created screens from woven chestnut. The Basque striped linen by Jean Vier can be seen covering the cushions. And finally, while wandering in the corridors, you will come across artwork by several local artists such as the photographer Serge Strippentoir or the painter Franck Cazenave. On the wall of the beauty salon, the “Surfer” by the mosaic artist Delphine Priem from Biarritz, illustrates magnificent delicacy and calm.
